This could be called our suburban version of a Shotgun House: long, one room wide with front and back doors aligned. A shot could go straight through without hitting anything. Like the originals, the shape is driven by a long, narrow lot. In this case, the footprint of the house extends to all the zoning setback lines. But the narrowness gives the house a distinct form and clarity. The layout is apparent from the moment you arrive. As you move through the house, the spaces open to the south west corner of the yard where the landscaping creates a private outdoor area. The core of the house is 16’ wide with a 4’ wide stairwell along the west side. The simple shed roof encompasses all spaces with sheltered areas at each end. Locally cut 1x12 eastern white pine is used as clapboards for siding. The rough 1” boards with mitered corners give the house a rich texture with deep shadow lines. Inside, the polished concrete floors, painted board ceiling and clear maple cabinets exude a warm, informal feel.
