Little Compton has the feel of a place where time stands still. It’s a well preserved agrarian landscape of fields and stone walls sloping down to the ocean. As devotees of modern art and architecture, our clients fell in love with a local anomaly: a circa 2008 house by a modernist NY architect with stunning views. The house has ample living and bedroom space but they wanted more room for a photo studio, media room, exercise area, garage and lap pool. We tucked the new construction to the edge of the lot so it could relate to existing plantings and stonewalls for scale while preserving an open field off the main house. We picked up on the existing fieldstone walls, bringing them up to the building and integrating them into the structure. The solution is an open, glassy aerie raised above the coastal flood zone.
