Cape Cod is the land of boardwalks cutting through dunes to endless beaches.
The Kyle House is a group of four small, shingled cottages strung together along a 110’ boardwalk. There is not really a front, side or back to the house. There is, rather, a series of indoor and outdoor spaces that become more private and defined as one moves through the site on the boardwalk.
A 12' square bike shed faces the street, with the boardwalk sloping down to meet visitors. Beyond is a small garden area framed by the shed, the main house and the boardwalk. Moving parallel to the house, the 5' wide walkway forms a connector between the main house and the guest house. Beyond the connector, the structures and walk frame the sweet spot of the site. At the far end of the boardwalk, answering the bike shed, is a small 10' x 16' studio. The architecture is simple: a repeating shingle-wrapped gable form with 2x4 rafter tails and large awning windows at the gable ends. This is time tested, low-maintenance Cape Cod fare.
