Our clients wanted a house that would be integral with the landscape. They decided on a 20 acre parcel with a long north/south ridge opening to a bowl on the west and the south. The driveway skirts the ridge with the house sited perpendicular to it. The long, one story plan consists of two gabled forms connected by a lower pitched roof. The low profile nestles into the site, a counterpoint to the tall surrounding pine trees. The pool and barn are tucked in beside a stonewall that retains the downhill side of the driveway. Exterior materials include stone, glass and wood. Wide, rough-sawn red cedar boards clad the house. Inside, dark wood trim and cabinet work punctuate the light colored walls and furnishings, deliberately kept neutral to avoid competing with the ever-present landscape.
